The Ingredient We're Proud Not to Use

YOU’RE WORTH THE STIR: WHY WILD FRIENDS IS PALM OIL FREE

We started Wild Friends in our college apartment with a simple mission: to make the most delicious peanut butter imaginable. Since then, we've learned two things about what it takes to achieve a four-stars, two thumbs up, eat-by-the-spoonful taste.

  1. Start with awesome ingredients, sourced from consistent, trusted, close-by suppliers. We source all our peanuts and almonds domestically from Georgia and California. Consistent sourcing creates consistent, delicious taste.

  2. What you don’t add is just as important as what you do.

This is why we are proud to be the first nut butter company to be Certified Palm Oil Free.

PALM OIL FACTS

Like hydrogenated corn, cottonseed, and soy oils, palm oil is solid at room temperature and used to decrease oil separation. Palm oil also tastes yucky (kind of like wax). Even if we could ignore the environmental issues with palm oil, we’d reject it on taste alone.

Palm oil is also a major global contributor to deforestation and loss of species habitat.

Around 90% of the world's oil palm trees are grown on a few islands in Malaysia and Indonesia – islands with the most biodiverse tropical forests found on Earth. Large areas of tropical forests have been cleared to make room for vast monoculture palm oil plantations. This clearing has destroyed critical habitat for many endangered species—including rhinos, elephants, orangutans and tigers.

Burning forests to make room for the crop is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Intensive cultivation methods result in soil pollution and erosion and water contamination.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, more than half of all packaged products Americans consume contain palm oil—it’s found in lipstick, soaps, detergents and even ice cream. We’ve chosen to opt out.

The vast majority of natural nut butter brands use palm oil to prevent oil separation. We think you, your family, and our planet are #WorthTheStir.

Thank you for supporting palm oil free brands and for making the world a friendlier place!

Best,
Keeley & Erika
