This is such a hard list to make since I have about 30 restaurants I consider “top 5”! But I’ll do the best I can ;). I’m going to stay away from the trendier places like True Food Kitchen & Sweet Green, since those already get plenty of love!
In no particular order, here are 5 places I recommend!
-
Founding Farmers | Washington, DC
We eat at Founding Farmers at least twice every single time we're in D.C. They serve comfort style food straight from the farm and are located just a few blocks away from the White House. The restaurant is actually LEED Gold Certified, meaning it's environmentally-friendly and sustainable. Founding Farmer's focuses on high-quality, real food and making everything from scratch. I can without a doubt say, they have the BEST apple pie and milkshakes on the planet. Grab a reservation and get ready to fall in love with this charming restaurant in the heart of DC! -
Gracias Madres | West Hollywood, CA
If the aesthetic of Gracias Madres isn’t already pleasing enough, their house margarita and nachos are out of this world good. I could dip anything in their homemade nacho cashew cheese…yep even an eraser would taste good with that stuff on it! You can’t go wrong with a pretty atmosphere, good food, and a spicy marg! -
Plow | San Francisco, CA
I would be lying if I told you I don't talk about going back to Plow at least once a week. It is hands down the best breakfast I have ever had in my life and totally worth the wait. Their food is seasonal and sourced from local farms. Yes the lemon ricotta pancakes are good, but OH MY GOSH. Their almond flour pancakes are the best thing I’ve ever eaten, not to mention they’re gluten-free! I can't wait to go back! -
Portage Bay Café | Seattle, WA
Their slogan is the best..."Eat Like You Give a Damn". They offer foods that are local, organic, & sustainable and are open for breakfast and lunch every day of the week in 4 different locations. *Warning: They give you MASSIVE amounts of food. The steel cut oatmeal is enough for 3 days worth of breakfast. To get a little taste of everything, I would opt for sharing the Rancher's Breakfast which includes: 3 organic farm eggs, choice of pepper bacon, house-cured pork loin, apple chicken or maple pork sausage, roasted organic potatoes, and your choice of a short stack of pancakes or two pieces of classic french toast. That's basically an organic breakfast for 2 people for only $17.50. Their french toast is heavenly and made out of their organic, house-made challah bread. You also get to go to the breakfast bar and load your french toast with organic, fresh fruits, nuts, maple syrup, & fruit compotes. -
Eb & Bean | Portland, OR
Eb & Bean completely transforms the frozen yogurt game. It's organic, rich in probiotic, and they offer both dairy & non-dairy flavors. No artificial anything, no GMOs, no corn syrup, and no preservatives. Not to mention it's super thick and creamy and unlike any dairy-free froyo I've had before. Their non-dairy chocolate magic shell is a dream and don't leave without getting one of the TOMBUMBLE candy bars. It's basically chocolate-covered caramelized peanut butter and will rock your world.
