When Keeley and I started Wild Friends, we were serious peanut butter fans. Like many kids, we grew up eating peanut butter daily. As college athletes, we were never without a big jar in our pantry, and when we started making nut butters, we made extra delicious, extra healthy peanut butter blends as our first products.
As Wild Friends peanut butters started appearing on grocery stores shelves, we frequently received requests to make alternatives to our palm oil free peanut butter so customers with peanut allergies could enjoy our products. This was an exciting and rewarding challenge because it meant that more people would could now enjoy Wild Friends spreads. So, we headed back to the test kitchen and returned with our Organic Honey Sunflower Butter!
Sunflower Butter vs. Peanut Butter
Sunflower Butter is made the exact same way as peanut butter, but we swap out peanuts for sunflower seeds. Our palm oil free Honey Sunflower Butter contains just four simple GMO-free ingredients: organic roasted sunflower seeds, organic sunflower oil, organic clover honey and sea salt.
Sunflower butter tends to be a bit thicker than peanut butter, so we blend the roasted seeds with a touch of organic sunflower oil to create a smooth, spreadable texture. We then add organic clover honey and a sprinkle of sea salt to create an incredibly delicious sweet and salty spread.
Is Sunflower Seed Butter Good for You?
Sunflower butter is made from little nutrient-dense sunflower seeds, which are a great source of protein, healthy fats, vitamin E and magnesium. The protein and healthy fats keep you satiated and feeling full and energized. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that reduces cell damage in our bodies and helps to slow the aging process. Magnesium is a key mineral in our bodies that promotes good sleep, muscle recovery, and healthy digestion and elimination. Our organic sunflower seed butter is also dairy-free, palm-oil free and gluten-free so more people can enjoy it.
Why Sunflower Seed Butter is a Good Alternative to Peanut Spreads
If you or someone in your life has a tree nut allergy, sunflower butter is a great alternative! We also make our sunflower seed butters in a peanut-free facility. Its texture is similar to peanut butter, so you can use it exactly the same as you would peanut butter, or any other Wild Friends nut butter.
It’s also a fun ingredient to cook or bake with. Some of our favorite ways to use it are: spreading it on a sandwich or piece of toast, drizzling it on pancakes or waffles, adding a spoonful to oatmeal or a smoothie, pairing it with apples or celery and using it instead of peanut butter when baking.
